Insecure Writer's Support Group: April 2013

Readers looking for the day's A-Z Challenge entry, you'll find that below this post.

The Insecure Writer's Support Group, which was founded by Ninja Captain Alex J. Cavanaugh, is a place where writers can gather to vent their frustrations or share their hopes, dreams, and fears.  This is a safe and supportive place for writers, so feel free to join in if this sounds like the place for you!

The co-hosts this month are Annalisa Crawford, Julie Luek, and Elsie.  Good luck with your c0-hosting duties!

With the A-Z Challenge underway, I feel optimistic about the comments I've been getting.  As a writer, you love to hear people say positive things about your work.  I'm grateful to everyone who takes the time to read my words.  I may write for myself, but I also want to make an impact on other people.

My insecurities this month have to do with juggling various projects.  I originally planned to have my A-Z story finished before the challenge actually started.  That didn't happen.  Family life put me behind schedule.  Still, I have plenty done, and I don't doubt I'll be able to finish the challenge.  I know where I want the story to go, and I'm very much enjoying writing it.

Still, with all of that to finish by a certain time, I wonder what other projects can I squeeze in?  If I feel inspired to write something else, should I follow that inspiration or put it on the back burner so I can finish the things I need to complete?  It's going to be all about prioritizing this month.  Then again, writers do that all the time?  What if you have two story ideas?  How do you choose which one to write first?  Or how do you proceed when you have a good idea that simply doesn't seem to be going anywhere?  How do you decide whether to retool the idea or trash it altogether?

In the spirit of making choices, I will leave this post at that and choose to go work on some more of my A-Z story!

  1. I never feel like I have enough time. Usually laundry and cleaning (until we have company) fall aside so I can get the important stuff(writing, blogging, reading) done.

  2. I have this same problem this month. Even though I scheduled my A to Z posts, it's taking up a lot of my time reading other people's posts and commenting, so I'm having to make more time to get my uni assignments done.

  3. Time always seems to be a big issue when it comes to writing while juggling everything else one has to do. I know I have this problem. If I have two ideas, I tend to go with whatever story is steaming a long the best.

  4. Oh stupid family life!! Always keeping in the way of the important things!! LOL! I kid.

You bring up some good questions. Often I find one story idea leads to another. When that happens I write it down and stick it in a file and stay focused on the task at hand.

When I get stuck on something, I break it down into a smaller window. I don't need to figure out how the story ends, I just need to figure out how the next page goes.

I love the thought provoking questions I often find in your blogs. Keep them coming!

  5. Time is especially difficult to come by these days. I certainly understand what you are going through. Just in my own life I have old parents that I'm trying to get into an assisted living facility and they keep fighting me. Just yesterday they had another "incident" with mom driving down the road (she isn't supposed to drive but they fight me on this). She ran over two mailboxes and smashed the car into a boulder (ugh). Police came and they couldn't find their insurance papers. Keep in mind my parents are in Idaho while I live in Utah. So they've finally admitted over the phone "it's time" and I'm scrambling to find them an assisted living facility in Salt Lake City. To add to that I'm also looking to buy a home for myself so working with a realtor and then holding down the job, etc. Ay Carajo!

  6. Hello again! Those are all questions I think about too. I guess I pick the story that seems to be taking up the most space in my head. There's usually one clamoring for attention more than the others! Good luck with your goals and prioritizing!

  7. I don't know I've never had two story ideas at once!
This month is all about priorities and balance. And both just might be a little out of whack for a while.

  8. I let stories ruminate for a loooong time in my brain, while I work on, you know, other stories. So, by the time I'm ready to start on a new idea, it's pretty clear in my head.

  9. I go with whichever story is the strongest. Sometimes it doesn't give you a choice! I always go with the one that has been around the longest if one doesn't push out in front of the other.

  10. Challenges always seem to bring out the best, make us go where we never imagined. I enjoy the journey! You are an excellent writer, an extremely creative individual and I love reading your work, thank you for sharing!

  11. I choose the story that has the tightest hold on me, but sometimes it is still hard to fight the others back.
