Blogspiration 15: Poetic Catharsis

Blogspiration is a weekly meme hosted by GrowingUp YA& Saz101. The meme was created to help spark inspiration among bloggers, readers & writers alike. An inspirational quote/picture/video is posted weekly, on the day of the author's choosing, so that it may inspire creativity, conversation & just a little SOMETHING.

First of all, I'd love to thank Saz101 for her Blogspiration post this week!  She did me the wonderful honor of quoting something I wrote. The quote comes from a previous Blogspiration post, which you can view HERE.  I merely wrote it as an explanation for why the inspiration I chose for the week had meaning to me, and I was quite surprised to see that my words meant something to her.  I guess the goal of writing words that leave an impression on a reader is one that all writers share. However, I find that I'm deeply surprised when it seems that I've accomplished that goal.

The holiday weekend has left me a tad off schedule, so I figured I'd do double duty and make this Blogspiration post count as my usual Tuesday post as well. That means I'll be sharing a couple of things with you. Hopefully none of you mind.

I'll start off by saying that I love song lyrics.  A song is poetry put to music.  In translating poetry to a musical form, you give that poetry a power that the words alone may not always accomplish.  The sound of the melody and the feel of the rhythm resonate with people.  They feel the music in their bones, and sometimes it even becomes a permanent part of them.  In many ways, music is an essential part of us.  And when a piece of music sinks inside and begins to change us, the words rewrite who we are to become.  This is an awe inspiring power, and definitely one to be respected.

Here is a line from a song that had this kind of impact on me.  The visual it inspired has always stuck with me, and I see it as the theme of my life.  I only hope I'll live up to it.

I want to make it to the moon, but I have a long way to go.  While I would love to literally go to the moon, in this context, making it to the moon would be to become a well-respected and accomplished writer.

The next thing I wanted to share comes from my poetry collection.  This is poetry I wrote many years ago.

My poetry may not have the benefit of musical accompaniment, but it expresses what I felt at the time it was written, so it remains significant to me if to no one else.  These words are emotions frozen in time, and looking back on these poems, I find that even after the passage of time, I can still relate to the sentiments expressed here.

The first poem was written for a class assignment when I was 14.  I listed it here because it was, in part, inspired by the song lyrics I already shared with you.

Yeah, I have an obsession with the moon and any other celestial object.  That much is probably obvious to my regular readers.

I don't remember what year I wrote this next poem, but it had to be in high school.  I performed this poem in a high school speech competition.  This poem helped me get to the state competition, but I didn't quite make it to the all-state competition.  Oh well.

I still feel the same determination to succeed now as I did then, maybe even more so.  Now that I have a family to take care of, the possibility of success matters more than ever.  In that way, this poem is still relevant to my life, and I'm proud that I wrote it.

I'll leave you with that.  Thanks for allowing me to share these things with you, and I hope you enjoyed them.

  2. Speaking of lyrics (which I like as well), the first thing that caught me was the title which I have read several times. But then the melody of the Doors song, "Riders on the Storm" buzzed me and I read your blog title with the same melody. Try it!

Oh, L.G., I LOVE the poetry, and this: "Yeah, I have an obsession with the moon and any other celestial object.". I so SO get this!
