Insecure Writer's Support Group: January 2013

One quick note.  For those of you who wish to read my entry for the No Kiss Blogfest, which is also going on today, click HERE to do so.

Welcome to 2013, and welcome to the meeting of the Insecure Writer's Support Group.  Our esteemed leader is Ninja Captain Alex J. Cavanaugh, and this month he has enlisted a couple of excellent co-hosts: Jamie from Mithril Wisdom and Tyrean from Tyrean's Writing Spot.  Best of luck to you both!

So, this is a new year.  2012 was the year I decided to put myself out there through blogging and sharing my writing with a wider audience.  You've all been amazing!  I'm glad I found such a great community of writers and readers.

Now I'm trying to decide what I want 2013 to look like.  This is where most of my insecurities are coming from right now.  A lot of people have been posting a list of goals for  2013.  I already have an idea of what projects I want to work on this year, but I'm not going to post a specific list here.  Instead, I want to adopt a specific attitude about writing this year, because at the end of the day, it's a lot easier to achieve your goals when you have the right attitude (or "write attitude") about work.  Therefore, I've written myself a little pledge.

A Writer's Pledge

I am a writer.
This will not change.
I will write each day,
even if only a little.
I will read when I can,
and I will keep learning.
I will accept critique.
I will look at criticism
as a learning opportunity
and I won't be discouraged.
I will keep blogging.
I will keep sharing.
I will encourage others
and congratulate them
on their successes.
Jealousy has no place here.

I pledge to thee,
my pen will be free.

It may not be the most eloquent of pledges, but I think it's a good declaration of the attitude I want to have for the next year.  It may not be easy, but nothing worth doing is easy.

If you were to make a pledge, what would you include?

Oh, and a quick reminder!  My Beginnings Blogfest is a week from today!  For those of you who don't know about it, click HERE to check out the details!

  1. I think that's a very eloquent pledge. I especially like the "my pen will be free" sentiment. More writers (myself included) would do well to adopt such a philosophy.

  2. Loving the pledge! I think we all need to adopt it and post it somewhere to keep us motivated!

  3. I think that's a very sensible pledge that we should all abide by. If I made one for myself, it would include something about setting time to read more. I want to write more but reading is just as important. Anyway, love checking out your blog. Cheers

  4. "Nothing worth doing is easy" - words to my ears :)

I like your writer's pledge; I think it's a better way to go about the year than a myriad of resolutions that may or may not get done. Good luck!

  11. Yeah that pledge is pretty cool. It kind of summarizes and focuses you as you read it, similar to psyching yourself up for battle.

  16. That pledge is AWESOME! Writing a pledge is a wonderful idea, of which I'm going to follow suit. A pledge is so much nicer than another resolution. Thanks for sharing.

  17. My pledge would include the idea of never losing the pure joy I feel while writing and to always remember it's a gift from above.

  18. I didn't do resolutions this year, I decided instead to go with a mantra or a word to plow through the year and keep me focused on my dreams and goals. I'm going with "Forward!" I love your poem!
