The Insecure Writer's Support Group: November 2013

It's time once again for the Insecure Writer's Support Group!  This group was formed by none other than the Ninja Captain himself, Alex J. Cavanaugh.  This month, he is receiving co-hosting assistants from the following bloggers/minions: C.D. Coffelt, Tina Downey, Isis Rushdan, and Michelle Wallace.

If you haven't checked it out already, go to the new IWSG webpage.  It's awesome!  Kudos to the amazing people that made it possible!

I'm currently under the weather, so my motivation to write is currently suffering somewhat, but I'm doing the best that I can.  I haven't stopped completely.  As a result of this illness, however, my level of hot tea consumption has skyrocketed.  Not that this is in any way a bad thing.

Anyway, I've been struggling with what to write for this post.  My mind is simply scattered right now.  So I looked up some writing quotes in the hope that one of them would inspire me.  And guess what.  It worked!  Inspiration can be found anywhere.  Sometimes you simply have to seek it out.

"The road to hell is paved with works-in-progress."  -Philip Roth

I can relate to this.  I have more works-in-progress than I feel like I should, probably because my head is overflowing with ideas, and I often wonder if I'll complete them all.  I'm sure I'm not alone in this, although it sometimes feels like I am when I see others finishing wonderful books left and right.

Does anyone else out there ever feel this way?  How do you handle it when too many ideas come to you all at once?

  1. I feel this way sometimes. I just write all of my ideas down, and work on the one that speaks to me the most. The others will just have to wait their turn! :)
    Hope you feel better soon!

  2. I can definitely multi-task with my reading, like 4 books at a time, however, I cannot multi-task with wips! I admit, I've shelved a few started wips for a later date because I didn't like where they were going. But once I start on a ms that I love, I have to totally concentrate on that one. Good Luck.

  3. I think that suffering from too-many-ideas-itis is far, far better than suffering from what-the-heck-am-I-going-to-write-about-itis, so I say you're definitely on the wining side of things.

I say go where your mind takes you, and trust that things will work themselves out in that totally unplanble way things tend to.

And in the mean time, there really no such thing as too much hot tea.

    Hoping you feel better soon!

  4. So sorry you're under the weather. Hope you feel better soon. I agree with Beverly, having too many ideas is better than having none! I like having them, writing them down, then sitting with them until they form into something I can actually do something with. Sometimes this takes awhile, or sometimes it comes like a flash of lightening. I LOVE your quote that you found! I feel like this too, sometimes. One of the reasons I'm doing NaNoWriMo this year, first time. I feel motivated. Okay, gotta go now, and have MY cup of tea!!!

  5. Let's see, on my TO WRITE To Do List:
Romance trilogy, first book 7 chapters done, 2nd/3rd raw notes only
Children's short story series: one done, 8 to go
Anthology short story: struggling on what to write but have characters
Books 3 & 4 in my mystery series: Opening scene written for both

Oh yeah, and I just came back from a 7 week motorcycle trip (my last ride on my own bike) and am spending this month preparing to move to Ecuador. Thus my three blogs are all suffering...

Yup, too many ideas and things to do....LOL!

  6. Yes. That was my excuse for not concentrating or finishing anything all year. I had 4 wips. Thank goodness for Nano to make me focus. Only 1 for this month and lots of prayers I can complete the rough draft.

  7. I try to concentrate on one project at a time and write down the other ideas as they come to me so I don't forget when I have time for them. Hope you feel better.

  8. Hey there LG,

Nice to "meet" you. I'm pretty boring this way, I'm afraid. If I get new ideas, I jot them down so I don't forget, and then keep working on my WIP. I always write one novel at a time. I'm finding it difficult to write and rewrite at the same time, let alone juggle two separate novels in progress.

It boggles my mind that some writers can work on multiple projects simultaneously. Doing so would pop me out of the world of the book so it was much harder to get back in. But I do see the appeal of it. If you're sick of one, you can move to another and not stop writing.

    IWSG members unite! :)

  9. I am right there with you. I currently have five WIP and still decided to do NaNo and will have another by the end of November. At some point I have to stop writing and get to publishing.

  10. Oh the hell I am in right now! Lol! I have so many ideas and have made lots of notes, even started a couple. So my road is currently well paved. Just don't know what to do right now, or where to start. Wish me luck, I need it.

  11. Lists! And lists within lists! Then at least I have the ideas out of my head and on paper - of course how long they remain on that list is a whole other issue LOL!
