The Insecure Writer's Support Group: January 2018

It's the first Wednesday of the month, and you know what that means!  Let's convene another meeting of The Insecure Writer's Support Group!  Our leader Alex J. Cavanaugh has recruited another bunch of excellent co-hosts: Tyrean Martinson, Ellen @ The Cynical Sailor, Megan Morgan, Jennifer Lane, and Rachna Chhabria.

Be sure to check out the IWSG website for the announcement of the anthology contest winners!

The question for this month is: What steps have you taken or plan to take to put a schedule in place for your writing and publishing?

This is an appropriate question as we start 2018.  Happy New Year, by the way!

I don't have any solid plans laid out when it comes to my writing and publishing goals for the coming year.  I have gone so far as to set one major goal, at least, and that is to complete the novel I started last year.  I'll keep that as my only goal for the time being so I'm not tempted to get distracted from it.

I've thought a lot about how I can help hold myself accountable for that goal.  I don't know how rigid of a schedule I can actually make for myself since having three young kids bouncing around the house makes that difficult.  Still, I'd like to make smaller monthly goals that will help me achieve that overall goal.  I think the best way to motivate myself will be to make those goals public here so I can hold myself accountable.

So, what is my goal for this month?  I'd like to reach 45K on my novel.  We'll see if I can get there by carving out some time each day to work on it.

Do you have a schedule in place for your writing?  What goals do you have for 2018?

  1. I like the idea of sharing monthly goals on your blog. Great way to build accountability. Happy New Year - Ellen

  2. Happy New Year, LG! That sounds like a great goal, even with three ankle-biters running around. Do you have a critique partner? I send one chapter at a time to mine (Nicki Elson) and that really helps motivate me.

  3. Monthly goals would probably work better and not look so daunting.

  4. I've set my yearly goals, but I usually forget what they are. That's why I do monthly goals because it helps keep me working steadily.

  5. It's so tough to write when you have small kids. My 22-month-old grandson lives with us, and so even tho my kids are grown, I'm right back in the soup. Distractions all day long. It's quiet when he naps. But with having 3 young kids, I suspect there might not be a time when they all nap. Or if they do, you need to rest!

Best wishes for finding scraps and bits and pieces of time to write each day.

  6. I use my journal to keep track of each of my goals. I'm always thrilled to check one off. Whether small or large, I'm a list maker from way back. I do get a bit flustered when things don't go my way, but I quickly regroup and look for other avenues to completion. But with little ones, it's so much harder, still doable, but with the need for more patience. ;)
From what I've seen, you've got it figured out!
Wishing success with all your goals! Good luck &
    Happy 2018!

  7. I don't have kids and I can't even keep a schedule. No two days in a week are the same, so it's impossible to plan exactly what I'll do each hour.
