E is for Endless

For this year’s A to Z Challenge, I’m writing drabbles based on words I got from a random word generator.  A drabble is a short piece of fiction of exactly 100 words.

Enjoy!

Endless

The second hand on the clock had never moved more slowly.  Sophie head ached from staring at the bright white wall of the waiting room.
Waiting room? she thought.  Calling it a torture room would be more appropriate.
The astringent scent of the hospital filled her nose, and the acrid tang of vending machine coffee lingered endlessly on her tongue.
When the doctor finally walked in, her body went rigid.  He gave her a reassuring smile and said, “Your son’s surgery went well.  You’ll be able to see him soon.”
The tension drained from Sophie’s body.  “Thank you,” she whispered.

  1. A drabble - what a nice word that is!
I felt myself in that hospital while reading that description

    Absolutely Amazing Alliteration

  2. "Waiting for a train to go or a bus to come, or a plane to go or the mail to come, or the rain to go or the phone to ring, or the snow to snow, or waiting around for a Yes or a No or waiting for their hair to grow. Everyone is just waiting."

But yeah, the hospital waiting for an update from the doctor, that's one of the worst ones.

  5. What a beautiful story! So much said in so few words. And it's a moment I think most everyone can relate to.

  6. I hate hospital waiting rooms, the one at our hospital has a flatscreen TV that's usually turned to something totally inane, so it's not so much a distraction as an annoyance. The magazines are years old and stuff that no one reads anyway, so that's no help. Waiting to be told you can go back to the exam room in the ER where your loved one is being treated is already nerve wracking enough, the wait seems to take forever when you have nothing to distract yourself with, at least nothing that works. Excellent description!
