The Geeky Dice & Debauchery Tour: Dice Superstitions with Christine Rains

Today I'm happy to host the amazing Christine Rains as part of her Geeky Dice & Debauchery tour.  The first book in the series, Loose Corset, is now available! Christine has a fun post to share with you, but first, I'll give you the details about her book!  You know you're curious!

A weekend away at a convention is exactly what overworked student Morgan needs. Dressed as her character from her favorite online game, Morgan is braced—seriously, could her corset be tighter?—to meet the other players. As Lady Gyrfalcon, she’s ready for everything—except her intense attraction to Dean. A clandestine meeting in the hallway of the hotel and Morgan’s corset is looser but now she can’t breathe for entirely different reasons.

Utterly charmed, Morgan decides to roll the dice and indulge in a fantasy-worthy weekend of sexy roleplaying, scorching sex and life-altering orgasms. Still, through it all Morgan is too smart to believe the chemistry constantly stripping her of costumes and control can last more than the length of the convention. But if she wants to keep a relationship so intense she thought it only existed in fiction, she’s going to have to let go of her cool-headed logic and allow herself to fall far and fast for the perfect guy.

A Romantica® contemporary erotic romance from Ellora’s Cave

DICE SUPERSTITIONS
By Christine Rains

Like any other group of enthusiasts out there, gamers are a superstitious lot when it comes to their dice.  This includes very logical me who never steps on a crack or will only get out of bed on the same side I got in to avoid bad luck. Yup, logical me.

As they're essential to most role-playing games, dice have powerful magic. I'm not so weird about my dice as some players, but best you keep these superstitions in mind before you sit down at a table with dedicated gamers.

Do Not Touch! - Many players believe it's bad luck when someone else touches their dice, especially if that other person is rolling poorly or if it's the Game Master. This is the most widespread superstition.  It's best if you never touch anyone else's dice without their permission. I've seen people abandon their dice because another person touched them.

Highest Number Up – When sitting their dice on the table, a lot of geeks will put the highest number facing up to encourage their dice to roll well.

Switching Out Sets – If one die or a set of dice are rolling bad, a player will switch it out for another one and segregate that tainted die from the rest in the dice bag.

Sets For Various Purposes – Some nerds will only use a certain set of dice for rolling stats, another for home play, and yet another for away play.

Praise Your Dice – Some players will cheer and compliment their dice if they're rolling well, and they'll yell at them if they're doing poorly. I've never attended a game where someone didn't talk to their dice.

Keep Rolling – If their dice are rolling well, gamers will keep them going and not let them grow idle or they'll go cold.

Dice Shaming – This is a relatively new thing I've been seeing. Players will take pictures of their poorly rolling dice and state what the dice made them fail. Google it. It's hilarious!

Fame Rub – If a player rubs a die on a famous person's autograph, body, or gravestone, it will give the die good luck. Of course, the most powerful fame rubs include Gary Gygax and Dave Arneson (the creators of Dungeons & Dragons).

Do you or your geeky friends have any dice superstitions?

  2. Dice shaming. That's a new one all right.
Other than I had my favorite set of dice, I wasn't superstitious.

    1. I'm one of the few gamers that I know that don't mind people touching their dice. Thanks for stopping by, Alex!

  3. LOL!!! I had no idea. My brothers got into dice gaming, but only at home in the privacy of our own company. I've got to go do a google search now...

    1. I hope you did google it and had a laugh. :) Lots of people I know hide their geekiness, but they should be proud of it!

  4. Fascinating to learn about dice superstitions. I have blown on dice before rolling, and I'll sometimes put the dice up on what number I want before I roll.

    1. I wonder what the whole dice blowing thing started from. What a good thing to google and procrastinate as I revise! :)

  5. I don't like letting other people touch my Tarot cards either. Don't want their energy on my cards. (Except when I'm doing a reading for them, which of course they need to touch the cards--but I have to "cleanse" them afterward!)

  6. I'm sitting here laughing. I've never been a supertitious person. Still, I've seen some of those behaviors with gamer and their dice.

Only time I roll out the other side of the bed is when I have a couple of cats curled up between me and the door. Especially if one is wounded. I have a huge bed easier to get in and out the same side than roll two and a half times (yep, I've counted the rolls) to get to the other.

    1. Gamers can be such odd folks! :) Can't disturb the kitties. That would make me go out the other side of the bed too. Thanks for dropping in, Sia!

  7. I'd be scared to take a gamer to Vegas then, lol. I'm not nerdy or a geek. But I do get into and out of the bed on the same side every time. And I hate for anyone to sleep with my pillow.

    Cool tour :)

  8. This is so cool! I myslef don't have any dice superstitions. But anytime I buy a new game I like to get a new set of dice to do with it.

LOVE the picture of the GenCon dice box. We have the same one here at home.

    1. Thanks, Timothy! We try to get a set of Gen Con dice every year we go. Or, at the very least, the D6 they make for each year. I'm excited that my son is almost at the age to start the children's programming at Gen Con! Thankfully our gamer genes were passed down successfully. :)
