I have a short bit of flash fiction today. This one was kind of fun to write. We'll see whether it's fun to read.
Today's word: DISMEMBERMENT
Enjoy!
Dismemberment
My heart is in the garbage can.
My eyes are under the rug.
My tongue is in the wood chipper.
My feet are incased in the concrete of the
patio, right under the table with the yellow umbrella.
My nose is in the freezer. I’m not sure how it got there.
Oh wait, I do know. It happened because I trusted you. I opened myself to you, allowed myself to
care, and you stomped all over me. With
my best friend, no less.
Yes, you both claim nothing happened
between you, but I know better. You’re
not fooling me.
You’re cruel, and you dismembered me with
your betrayal.
Now, you’re probably rolling your eyes and
thinking that I’m being overdramatic. I’m
not claiming the dismemberment is literal.
I’m speaking metaphorically here.
I thought I should make that clear so you don’t start thinking I’ve gone
crazy.
You’re thinking it anyway, aren’t you? Aren’t you?
Oh well.
I swear that I’m done now.
Really. I mean it. No more notes in your car. No more knocking on your door at 3A.M. No more messages on your answering
machine. I’m serious. You won’t need to change your phone number
for a third time.
You’re not worth it to me.
Seriously.
Hoping this is pure fiction, as betrayal by partner and best friend would be a huge blow. Loved it, and the title sure brought me over here. Fun D
ReplyDeleteLove the metaphor. Anyone who has ended a relationship can relate to this. I agree with Rhonda, great title.

Now that story swung on its axis three time, which is no mean feat in so few words! :) First the thought that this was literal dismemberment, to the metaphorical betrayed other half, to the stalker!

Loved how you made it feel like physical dismemberment when it was wasn't.
ReplyDeleteI can remember feeling like this in the past. It's beautifully written.
ReplyDeleteGood luck with the 2015 A to Z Challenge!

Wow, that must've been a serious heart stomping. Hope he's past it now.
ReplyDeleteYou had me there for a minute! I was taking it quite literally.
ReplyDeleteVery dramatic and poetic! I also took it literally at first, lol.
ReplyDeleteCan confirm it was fun to read too!

It started out as 'agonizingly' cruel... then it took that humorous turn... unless he was serious? Enjoyed!
ReplyDeleteThat very word makes me cringe. Awesome metaphor! Well done! :)
ReplyDeleteWow! I thought, "Metaphorical..." Then I thought, "She's really dismembered! (the character, I mean)" Then I thought, "Is this a ghost story?" Then I thought, "She's talking in her head, over and over again. It's unhinged her." And then I thought "Oh, well done!"
ReplyDeleteSomehow, I don't believe a word of it. Great use of the word dismemberment!
ReplyDeleteDisturbing! (And I mean that in a good way.)
ReplyDeleteWhen I saw the word dismemberment, I thought the worse... as in physical dismemberment.
ReplyDeleteGreat piece!
