WEP October Challenge: The Scream

It's October, and that means it's time for another WEP challenge. This month's challenge is inspired by another famous piece of art, THE SCREAM. Perfectly suited to this time of year, I think.

This time around, we're asking members to try their hand at writing their own taglines for their entries. You can find mine at the end of the post.

Here's my entry. I hope you enjoy it!

Cries in the Night

I jolted upward, cloth constricting me as I struggled to sit up. My heart raced as I cast my eyes desperately around me, the inky darkness making it impossible to see.

Nothing was familiar. I’d been asleep, but I wasn’t in my bedroom. My breath caught in my throat as I struggled to make sense of anything.

“What was that?”

The words, spoken directly into my ear, nearly sent me flying out of my skin. It took a moment to process and recognize it. “Vanessa?”

“Of course it’s me. Who else would be in here with you?”

That’s when it all fell back into place. I was in a tent with my best friend, my body trapped in a sleeping bag. We’d chosen to go camping together so we could get some time away from our families for a couple of days. Having turned freshly eighteen, we were both technically adults, but living at home meant we still had to follow other people’s rules. It was nice to get out on our own for a little while.

At least in theory. A panicked late-night awakening hadn’t been a part of my plans. “Yeah. Sorry. Forgot where I was for a minute.” I ran my hands through my sweat-soaked hair.

As my breathing returned to normal, I turned my attention to Vanessa. My eyes were adjusting somewhat to the darkness, so I could distinguish the ghostly outline of her face. Her eyes were wide, and her shoulders were as tense as I’d ever seen them.

“What’s wrong?” I asked.

Vanessa’s mouth dropped. “I heard something. For crying out loud, it woke you up!” Her words came out like a harsh whisper, urgent and incredulous.

A noise had woken me, then. That made sense, though I failed to recall it. “What was it?”

Vanessa bit her lower lip. “It sounded like a scream.”

My body froze. Surely a scream hadn’t wrested me from my slumber. We were pretty deep into the woods. It took the entire day to hike out to our campsite. There shouldn’t have been another soul for miles.

I’d almost convinced myself that Vanessa had been mistaken when it came again.

“Help! Somebody help me!” The scream tore through the night like a blade.

It was a woman’s voice, and the terror in her plea sent my heart racing again. She sounded breathless, like she was running for her life. Was someone or something chasing her? How nearby was she? Her voice sounded too close for comfort.

Vanessa cursed under her breath.

“What do we do?” I asked, scarcely loud enough for her to hear.

For a brief moment, I thought of movies where the heroes ran into the line of fire and saved the day. People who risked their lives to save others in distress. Part of me wished to be that kind of person, but the larger part of me was too terrified to budge from my spot.

Vanessa seemed to be of a similar mind. She put a finger to her lips, pleading for me to remain silent. Meeting her eyes, I could read her thoughts so clearly they felt like my own. We were unarmed. If we went out there to confront the unknown danger, we could easily end up running for our own lives.

“Help!”

I sucked in my breath. That was definitely closer. Vanessa and I stared at one another, both of us coming to the same realization. We were in danger. I thought of the campfire we’d lit outside. It was down to embers when we turned in for the night. Would someone see it? Would the screaming woman see our campsite and seek help from us? Would the person or animal pursuing her see it?

Part of me wished I could huddle in my sleeping bag and hide myself from the world. Another longed to run. I dared do neither for fear of making a sound.

Several long moments passed as we both strained to hear. The snapping of twigs and crunch of underbrush was audible by that point.

Don’t come this way. Please don’t come this way. My silent recitations played on a loop in my mind as I waited for disaster to strike.

Then the sounds of fleeing footsteps began to fade, and the next strangled cry was more distant than the last.

Vanessa and I waited in silent terror until long after the screaming had stopped.

*     *     *

Three weeks later, a couple out on a walk stumbled across the body of a woman. She’d been stabbed more than thirty times and her head had been severed. The location was less than an eighth of a mile from where Vanessa and I had been camping.

My blood ran cold when I saw the news reports. I wanted to reach for my phone to call Vanessa, but I couldn’t move. That was the screaming woman. It had to be. What was her name? Who killed her, and why? Could we have possibly intervened and saved her, or would an attempt have merely gotten us killed too?

I imagined being in her shoes, fleeing for my life, alone and afraid, while two people hid away nearby, too scared to do anything but wait until it was all over.

My hands began to shake violently, and I barely made it to the bathroom before the nausea overtook me.

Now let's move on to the optional question for this month.

What was an early experience where you learned that language had power?

Language is indeed powerful. I think I knew this from an early age when I listened to stories of adventure and imagined myself taking part in those adventures. Language can inspire. It can motivate. It can educate. These are all wonderful things, and even though I was too young to put that into words, I knew I wanted to be a writer so I could harness that ability for myself.

That power goes both ways, though. I learned a lot about how destructive words could be after I started Kindergarten. I've always been socially awkward, and that caused me a lot of problems as a kid. I had a hard time making friends, and a lot of other kids made fun of me. The old saying "sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me" sounds great in principle, but it really isn't true. Words can inflict a tremendous amount of hurt.

Fortunately, writing has always been a source of strength for me. When times get tough, I write. I use my writing to fashion new realities. It's a way of escaping reality. It's also a way of coming to terms with difficult things and trying to make the world a better place.

How did you learn about the power of language?

Masquerade Ball Bloghop: The Unmasking and Book Release Celebration!

Lights! Camera! Action!

The day has come! Masquerade: Oddly Suited is now available! It is also time for the Masquerade Ball Bloghop to come to an end, and that can only mean one thing. Yes, it is time for each of the authors to unmask their characters.

I'd like you to meet Ramona. You may have already met her masked version on Anstice Brown's blog.

Oddly Suited

Blurb:

Ramona enjoys making entertaining videos with her friends and posting them online. She also co-writes the scripts with her crush Adam. Sometimes it’s difficult to keep her feelings hidden, but when Adam’s antics inspire a zany Valentine’s Day video, her task becomes nearly impossible.

Not only does she have to write a fun, romance-themed script with him, she must also play his love interest on camera.

Can she play her role while also masking her true feelings?

Bio:

L.G. Keltner has been attempting to write novels since she was six.  None of those early attempts were any good, but her passion for writing remained strong.  She graduated from Drake University in 2008, and she lives in Iowa with her husband and children. L.G. writes mostly science fiction, though she also enjoys writing humorous young adult stories.

Celebrate the Small Things-December 14, 2018

It's Friday! Let's Celebrate the Small Things with Lexa Cain! I am her co-host.

My boys had a school Christmas concert last night. They always enjoy being on stage. Jude's class was part of a short musical that made up the last half of the concert, and he had some lines to memorize. He worked so hard on them and was so excited about learning his part.

I finished writing and editing a short story this week. I submitted it on Wednesday. Whether it ends up being accepted or not, it always feels good to submit my work.

I also pulled out a novel draft that's mostly written. Right now it's sitting at about 88,000 words. The ending tripped me up, so I put it down for a little while. I plan to start reading through it, making some notes, and coming up with some idea of how to end it. Then I can hopefully start editing it!

Also, I'm excited to announce that my short story "A Meal for Dragons" has been published in the newly release Young Explorer's Adventure Guide, Volume 5. This was such a fun story to write! You can find the book for sale on Amazon. You can also add it on Goodreads!

Celebrate the Small Things-July 6, 2018

It's Friday! Let's Celebrate the Small Things with Lexa Cain! I am her co-host.

I'd like to start by wishing my husband a happy birthday! Though today is his special day, he still has to go to work, but at least it's Friday, right?

We all had a great 4th of July weekend. We got to set off and see lots of neat fireworks, and all of us remained safe.  The kids had an amazing time, and they were disappointed that the fireworks are now done until next year.

I'd also like to celebrate the release of the Normal Deviation anthology.  It's always a thrill to see something I wrote published in a book.  I think that's a feeling a lot of writers can relate to. I try to remind myself of that feeling every time I get discouraged about my work.

Celebrate the Small Things-April 27, 2018

It's Friday!  Let's Celebrate the Small Things with Lexa Cain!  I am her co-host.

My son Lyle is going on a field trip to the zoo today, and the weather turned out beautiful for it.  He's super excited to see the giraffes.

On Wednesday, I posted a fun Mad Lib story on the Parallels blog.  If you feel like having a quick bit of fun with words, feel free to check it out!

I've started a regular exercise routine, and I'm three days in.  There has been some soreness, which is to be expected, but it hasn't been too bad.  I just need to stick with it.  The decision to get back into shape won't be easy to implement, but I intend to follow through with it.

The Kickstarter for the Normal Deviation anthology I'm involved with is still ongoing.  If anyone wants to help support the project, please check it out!  And if you can't support it financially (which I completely understand), please help spread the word!  I've composed a tweet below to help make that easier.

Do you like #weirdfiction? The #NormalDeviation #anthology is a collection of #stories from @wonderboxpub based on one #strange picture. Please help support this collection on #Kickstarter and get some cool rewards! https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/335044740/normal-deviation-the-completed-weird-fiction-antho

Celebrate the Small Things-November 10, 2017

It's Friday!  Let's Celebrate the Small Things with Lexa Cain! Tonja Drecker and I are her co-hosts.

I got some great news regarding one of my short stories this week.  Near the end of August, I submitted a short story called "Becoming Death's Personal Assistant" to for an anthology called Normal Deviation.  The premise of the anthology intrigued me.  The guidelines required us to use the chosen photo as inspiration, come up with three story ideas, get rid of the first two, and write a story based on the third idea.  I did just that, and I found out this week that my story was selected for publication in the anthology!  I'm definitely excited about this one.

I also got a lot more writing done on my untitled novel in progress.  I'm nearing the 20K mark, and I hope I can keep up my momentum.

We're also looking to buy a used car in the next week or so.  We have the funds to buy something decent.  I'm just hoping to find something good in our price range.  Wish me luck on that!

Adam's Apple and the Infinite Regress is Now Available on Smashwords and Wattpad

Hello everyone!  I just wanted to do a quick post to let everyone know that my sci-fi comedy story Adam's Apple and the Infinite Regress is now available for free on Smashwords and Wattpad!

I originally wrote this story for the A to Z Challenge in 2013. I dug it up a couple weeks ago, and I decided to polish it up a bit and self-publish it.  We'll see how it does.  Here's a quick rundown on the plot.

Adam Evans has always felt like the universe was mocking him. That only gets worse when he's charged with murder under bizarre circumstances and exiled from existence. Facing a life of utter solitude, he seizes the opportunity to escape with a strange girl. He's determined to put his life back together, but he never could have guessed how crazy things were about to become.

It's still awaiting premium approval, so I don't have it available through any other retailers yet.  When it is, I'll share the links with all of you.  Happy reading!

The Insecure Writer's Support Group: June 2016

It's the first Wednesday of the month!  That means it's time for another meeting of the Insecure Writer's Support Group. The enigmatic Alex J. Cavanaugh is our esteemed leader.  His minions for this month are Murees Dupe, Alexia Chamberlynn, Chemist Ken, and Heather Gardner.

Be sure to stop by the IWSG website!

There's a lot going on.  It's crazy to think that Parallels: Felix Was Here has been out in the world for nearly a month.  If you haven't picked up your copy, I'd recommend you do!  It's an enjoyable read, though considering my involvement in it, I'm admittedly biased.

As I mentioned in a post over the weekend, I've had another bit of good writing news.  I've had a story accepted for the upcoming anthology Circuits & Slippers.  The anthology, edited by Jaylee James, features classic fairy tales rewritten as science fiction.  My story "Treating the Beast" is based on Beauty and the Beast.  The anthology is expected to be released in September of this year.

So I have those things to boost my writing confidence.  Now it's time for me to delve into my insecurities.  I've decided to release my next novella Self-Help 101 or: How to Survive a Bombardment With Minimal Injury on Tuesday, June 28th. That is just under four weeks from now.  The novella is written and has been through one major revision, but there's still some editing I need to complete.  I'm aware that I'm behind when it comes to getting this thing promoted and all that. Still, I need to release it before the 4th of July, and it's doable as long as I buckle down and do it.

If any of you are willing to help me with my cover reveal, please sign up with the linky below.  The date for the reveal is Tuesday, June 14th.  Now, if you can't post on that day, I'm fine with whenever you want to post it.  You can post it a couple days later, or even a week later.  I just need people to help me spread the word prior to release.

Finally, I've decided not to do the traditional blog tour for this one.  Instead I want to try doing a handful of guest posts stretched out over a couple of months rather than an intense two week marathon.  I'm curious about which yields better results in the long run.  If any of you are interested in having me do a guest post, let me know in the comments.

Thanks everyone!  What are you insecure or enthusiastic about this month?

A Special Announcement!

In my post on Friday, I said I had two pieces of exciting news to announce, but I had to wait until the right time.  Well, I can announce one of them now.  The other will have to wait just a bit longer.

I recently submitted a story for an anthology.  Circuits & Slippers features classic fairy tales told through the lens of science fiction.  I decided to write and submit a science fiction retelling of Beauty and the Beast.  I was thrilled when I found out my story "Treating the Beast" was selected to appear in the anthology!

Circuits & Slippers is scheduled to be released in September of this year.  Click here to see the complete list of authors included in the anthology.

I'm so excited to be a part of this project!

The Insecure Writer's Support Group: May 2016

It's the first Wednesday of the month!  That means it's also time for another meeting of the Insecure Writer's Support Group.  This group was founded by Ninja Captain Alex J. Cavanaugh.  His co-hosting minions for this month are Stephen Tremp, Fundy Blue, M.J. Fifield, Loni Townsend, Bish Denham, Susan Gourley, and Stephanie Faris.

Be sure to check out the IWSG website!

The big news this month is that the IWSG anthology

Parallels: Felix Was Here is now available!  I'm super excited to be a part of this, and I hope everyone who gets a copy enjoys reading it.

I'm just finishing up a story for submission, and I'm nervous about it. Bracing for potential rejection is never fun, but it's all part of the process.

I'll also be entering the revision stage on my latest novella once I'm done with that short story.  I'm always insecure about revision, but I think I've been getting better about it over the last year or so.  I definitely don't have as much anxiety about it as I used to.

What are you insecure or excited about this month?

Happy Release Day!

Release day has arrived!  The IWSG anthology is now available!  It has been such an honor to be a part of all this, especially since so many talented authors are included in this anthology.

Interesting sidenote.  This also happens to be my 1,000th blog post.  Yeah, I know how to yammer on, don't I?

Anyway, I should get back to the point of this post.

Over on the Parallels blog, each author pledged to give away a free copy of the anthology.  I'm giving away an e-copy, and the winner is:

Nilanjana Bose @ Madly-in-Verse

Congratulations!

Now, for those of you who want to learn more about the book and how you can get a copy for yourself, read on!  I hope people enjoy reading this book as much as I enjoyed writing "Felix Was Here" and collaborating with my fellow authors in promoting this book.
