Express Yourself: Oh, the Anticipation!

The Express Yourself Weekly Meme is hosted by the always amazing Jackie @ Bouquet of Books and Dani @ Entertaining Interests.

This week's question is . . .

(drumroll)

Are there any books, movies, or music you're anticipating for in 2013?

Every year brings something great to the world, and I'm sure this year will be no different.  There's one book I cannot help but anticipate.  As an avid Neil Gaiman fan, I was excited to hear about his upcoming adult novel The Ocean at the End of the Lane.  He always manages to whip up amazing tales, so this is one book I know I'll have to read.  It comes out June 18th.

As far as movies go, there are two I'll mention here.  They are Star Trek Into Darkness and Catching Fire.  I've seen these two movies on lists already, but that's hardly a surprise.

Music is a different story.  I'm not eagerly awaiting the release of any particular album.  Instead I'll listen freely to what comes out.  As always, I'll come to love new songs in the coming year, and there will also be new ones that will rub me the wrong way.  Such is life.

What are you looking forward to this year?

My Favorite Martian

Today The Geek Twins are hosting the My Favorite Martian Bloghop.  This one seemed like a perfect match for me.

I have a love for many aliens.  It's hard to choose my favorite from among all the worthy candidates.  Whether they're bad guys, good guys, or the ones who seem indifferent to petty human concerns, I find them endlessly entertaining.  Growing up with this love, I always hoped I'd be around to personally witness first contact.

Still, I need to pick a favorite, so I'll go with The Doctor.
My personal TARDIS.

If you don't know who that is, I have no idea what planet you've been living on!

The Doctor is a renegade Time Lord that travels the universe in his trusty TARDIS.  For those who don't know, that stands for Time and Relative Dimension in Space.  He has two hearts, he carries a sonic screwdriver, he regenerates, and he saves entire worlds from destruction on a regular basis.

Each regeneration has a distinct personality, along with a bizarrely unique sense of style. Whether he wears a giant scarf, a spiffy suit, or a bow tie, he kicks alien butt every time!

If it were possible to go on an adventure with The Doctor, I would!  I even wrote a letter to my husband for a previous blogfest, informing him that I was going travelling with The Doctor.  You can read it HERE.  Of course, I wouldn't leave my family behind to travel in the TARDIS.  I'd simply take them with me.

Then again, my two boys might play in the control room and accidentally crash the TARDIS. Hey, it isn't as if The Doctor hasn't ever crashed it!

Plans for the Week

My muse isn't angry with me right now.  We seem to be working together harmoniously this week.  Then again,  it is only Monday.

I have a few simple goals for this week.  It will be a lot to accomplish, but not so much that I don't think I can handle it.  Last week, I completed posts A, B, and C for the April A-Z Challenge.  This week, I hope to get three more done.  So here I come D, E, and F!  Maybe I'll do more if the inspiration is good to me in that area, but those three are the ones I am promising myself I'll do.

I'm also toying with the idea of signing up my other blog for the A-Z Challenge so I can get more traffic for it.  If I do, I need to come up with an idea for relatively simple, short posts.  Doing something complicated for both blogs might kill me.

I'm also going to work on the WIP I dug out again last week.  I'm hoping to get at least a couple thousand words done on that.  I know I can do it if I put my mind to it.

Then, of course, I'll stick to my normal blogging schedule.  There's plenty to do, but I'm feeling motivated!

Blogspiration 35: Hold On to One Another

Blogspiration is a weekly meme hosted by GrowingUp YA & Saz101. The meme was created to help spark inspiration among bloggers, readers & writers alike. An inspirational quote/picture/video is posted weekly, on the day of the author’s choosing, so that it may inspire creativity, conversation & just a little SOMETHING.

Last week I asked the question about why we risk love.  There are, of course, many kinds of love.  Even if you are one of the people who has given up on romantic love, odds are you still feel plenty of love for certain people in your life.

The different kinds of love we feel for one another are valuable.  People are valuable.

Objects are replaceable.  People are not.

That's why I feel like the following quote is spot on.

Have a great week, and make the best of your time with the people you love!

What Are Your 18 Things?

I decided to join in on the What Are Your 18 Things? Blogfest because it sounded like fun.  Jamie Ayers is hosting this event to celebrate the upcoming release of her book 18 Things.

The idea is straightforward.  Sometime between January 17th-24th, blog about your bucket list.  Don't have one?  Then why not write one?  A bucket list can be a good source of motivation.  It helps you organize priorities and focus on what's important.

So, here are my 18 things.
  1. Have a book published the old fashioned way
  2. Visit Australia
  3. Visit the UK
  4. Own a house
  5. Go skydiving
  6. Take flying lessons
  7. Go up in a hot air balloon
  8. Own a writing desk (somehow I've been meaning to get one for a long time but it just hasn't happened)
  9. Go to a sci-fi convention
  10. Meet Neil Gaiman
  11. Meet Neil deGrasse Tyson (wow, I must like Neils)
  12. Be interviewed on TV or in a major publication about my writing
  13. Go to Adult Space Academy
  14. Give my kids a fun family vacation.
  15. Make sure my kids get a good education
  16. Learn Klingon
  17. Meet an actor who's played The Doctor
  18. Go into space (I know this one's extra ambitious, but with private industry making plans for commercial flights, it's not impossible)
There's my list!  Some items are more ambitious than others, but I think it's a pretty good list to keep me motivated.  What items would you put on your bucket list?

Celebrate the Small Things-Week 1

Today is the first posting of Celebrate the Small Things.  VikLit @ Scribblings of an Aspiring Author started this weekly Friday meme as a way to celebrate our little accomplishments.  They can be related to writing, or life in general.  Any accomplishment is worthy of mention.  Just because you didn't save the world this week doesn't mean you don't have anything to be proud of! So feel free to sign up and join in!

*               *               *               *               *

Though I plan on getting more done before the week officially ends, I already have some small accomplishments to share.  So far this week, I've posted three pieces of flash fiction.  I love writing flash fiction because it helps me keep the creative juices flowing.  I've also written my first three posts for the April A-Z challenge.  And lastly, at least as far as my writing goes, I pulled out an old WIP I got stuck on awhile back and started to plug away at it again.  Overall I have a lot of confidence in this novel, and I hope I can finish it in the near future.  I'm determined!

And, of course, I've kept up with the practical aspects of my life.  My kids are alive and fed, the dishes are done, and I'm caught up on all my laundry duties. All in all, I'd say that's a reasonably successful week!

Memoirs From the End of the World: Entry #20

Memoirs From the End of the World
Entry #20

When RC stretched out, her feet touched one wall while her hands touched another.  They’d been tossed into a modestly sized closet.

Then she remembered her backpack filled with foraged food, first aid supplies, and Romero.  They’d surely be able to survive if their captors stole their food, but if they read Romero . . .  RC couldn’t remember for certain if her diary entries would give away an exact location for their house, but the possibility was horrifying.  She could only hope none of the goons liked to read.

“This is great,” she mumbled to herself.

“Try not to panic,” Alyx said in a soothing whisper.  “We’re still alive.  That’s worth something.”

This much was true, but she had her doubts about how long that would continue to be the case.  “I was hoping you had a plan,” RC said.  She was searching for something, anything to keep a flame of hope flickering.

“My plan hinged on not being locked in a closet,” Alyx replied.  His voice betrayed regret.  He clearly felt bad about this turn of events.

She wished she could offer him a smile, but there in the dark, such gestures would be pointless.  After a moment of thought, she reached out.  Though they were wedged tightly together, it took a moment of searching before she found his face.  Resting her palm against his cheek, she tried to speak with the confidence she only wished she felt.  “We’ll figure this out together.  I promise.”

“I should have been able to get us out of this,” he mumbled.  “What good am I to you if I can’t even keep you safe?  And with Ollie sick, the others need us.  If we don’t make it back, I’ve failed them too.”

RC might have been able to write that off as an understandable level of despair given their current predicament.  It couldn’t be easy for him knowing that his actions could determine her fate as well as his.  Yet, she sensed something that went far deeper.  “You were brave out there.  You tackled that jerk even though he’s twice your size, and you actually knocked him down.  Not to mention that you’ve faced plenty of other dangerous situations, and you keep making it out again.  That’s worth a lot.  Why do you expect so much more of yourself than anyone else would?”

Alyx covered her hand with his.  “The same reason why Ollie said I wasn’t man enough for any woman.  If I can’t be enough on my own, I have to be even more in every other way.  If I can’t do that, I’ll never be able to have any of the things I want from life.”  His voice trembled as he spoke, and she knew he was on the brink of saying something that terrified him.

“If this is about you being sterile, a lot of women could deal with that.”

He sighed.  “It’s more than that.”

Her heart jumped as she absorbed his apprehension.  “How much more?”

Silence.

“Alyx, you can trust me,” RC insisted.

He leaned his forehead against hers.  “I know I can. It’s just difficult to talk about certain things.”

RC wished she could see his face.  She wanted to read his feelings from the way he looked at her.  As it was, she’d have to rely solely on nonvisual cues.  Knowing he could only read her in the same way, she stroked his hair. “Take your time.”

Alyx nodded, as if giving himself permission to move forward.  “I was born different.  When my biological mother was pregnant with me, my body got confused.  At least, that’s the best way I can think of to explain it.  I’m male, but that part of my anatomy didn’t develop the way it should have.  I went partway in between, mostly one way, but not completely.  That’s why Ollie said I’m not man enough.”

She opened her mouth to respond, then closed it again when the words didn’t come.  She needed to know more about the implications, though it felt awkward to ask.  “Does that mean you can’t . . . at all?”

Wow, you can’t even say the word aloud, you dork, she chastised.

“What I do have is functional,” Alyx said hurriedly.  “I just don’t look like most guys, and I can’t have kids.  I . . . uh . . .”  Then he pulled away from her.  “This is so embarrassing.  There’s a reason I don’t tell people.”

Though she couldn’t help wondering exactly what was different about him, hearing the pain in his voice forced her to focus on what was actually important.  “If you’re ever going to be with anyone, you have to.”

“I know that.”

She wondered if she should even ask the question, but in the end, it nagged her too much not to ask it.  “Is that why you walked away after we kissed?”

“Yes.  Rose, you’re amazing.  I like everything about you, but I was scared.   My biological parents weren’t sure if they wanted me, and they didn’t want a child with any problems, so that’s what helped them decide to give me up.  If they couldn’t take it, how would anyone else?”

So he did care about her.  Right there, huddled beside him in that closet, she realized that was the only detail that mattered.  They’d figure out everything else out later.  Finding his face again with her hands, she pulled herself to him and pressed her lips to his.  A feeling blossomed in her chest as he wrapped his arms around her and kissed her back.  This time, he didn’t pull away.  He didn’t hesitate.

There, in the dark, they found comfort in one another.  RC fell asleep in his arms, happy that at least one thing in life was still good.

Hours later, Alyx and RC woke to the sound of the door opening.

A bruised and bloody Isabel stood over them with coats in hand.  “Come on,” she whispered.  “We’re getting out of here.”
